1. What is a Provisional Driving Licence?
A provisional driving licence is a temporary licence that allows you to drive on UK roads under supervision. It is a requirement for anyone who wants to learn to drive a car, motorcycle, or moped and is valid until you pass your full driving test.
2. How to Apply for a Provisional Licence
Applying for your provisional licence is simple and can be done online via the GOV.UK website or by post. To be eligible, you must:
- Be at least 15 years and 9 months old.
- Be able to read a number plate from 20 metres away.
- Provide a valid UK passport or other form of identification.
- Provide proof of your address from the last three years.
- Pay the application fee (currently £34 online or £43 by post).
Once your application is processed, you should receive your provisional licence within one to three weeks.
3. What Can You Do With a Provisional Licence?
Once you have your provisional licence, you can:
- Start learning to drive a car from the age of 17 (or 16 if you receive the enhanced rate of the mobility component of Personal Independence Payment).
- Drive on UK roads while supervised by a qualified instructor or someone over the age of 21 who has held a full UK driving licence for at least three years.
- Ride a moped or motorcycle (subject to additional rules and restrictions).
However, you cannot drive on motorways unless accompanied by a DVSA-approved driving instructor in a car fitted with dual controls.
